Buckeye Local board waives right to property
DILLONVALE – The Wells Township Trustees can proceed with plans to sell the former Washington School building on Prospect Street since the Buckeye Local Board of Education has waived its right to the property.
Superintendent Coy Sudvary explained the property was transferred to the former Village of Brilliant in 1966 on the condition that its ownership be reverted to the school district if it were no longer used for municipal purposes.
The Jefferson County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society has cited records indicating the school operated from 1888 to 1965..
In the years that followed, it was occupied by Brilliant village officials, including its police department; the Brilliant Lions Club, which held various community events there; and following the village’s dissolution, the Wells Township Trustees.
In recent years, the trustees and the township’s police department moved into the former Buckeye Local North Elementary School on Hudson Street.
Township Trustee Brian Harvey, who was called for comment, said after an individual expressed interest in buying the property, the reversion clause was discovered.
Sudvary noted the school district will retain mineral rights to the site.
At its Sept. 21 meeting, the school board also acknowledged member Steve Bezak for receiving the Ohio School Board Association’s S.T.A.R. Award.
OSBA officials said the award is presented through its Service, Training, Aptitude and Recognition program to board members who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to professional growth and effective leadership.
To be eligible for it, board members must score at least 80 percent on an aptitude test.
Bezak’s membership on the Buckeye Local board and the Jefferson County Joint Vocational Board, of which he is president, was noted by the organization.
He thanked the Buckeye Local board for appointing him to the latter board.
In other business, the board:
Renewed contracts with Kendall Behavioral Solutions, which provides behavioral intervention services for students; and Vaza Consulting to seek grants and other funds for the school district.
Accepted the retirement, later this year, of Kimberly Boyd, a teacher at Buckeye Local South Elementary School, while expressing thanks for her 31 years of service to the school district.
Approved the following personnel: Beth Petrosino as supplemental bus coordinator for the district; Cathy Takach as an educational aide; Stephanie Lewis as a custodian; Jeremy Drysdale as head boys track coach at the high school; Luke Fabry as assistant softball coach; Tyler Blanco as fall weightlifting instructor; Sam Jones and Fabry as co-advisers of the junior high school’s bowling club; Jason Merryman as coach for the junior high boys and girls track coach; James Hess as volunteer volleyball coach; Brian Hennebert as volunteer girls wrestling coach; Tony Marques as assistant boys wrestling coach; Sean Norman as assistant softball coach; Mark Crowe as eighth grade boys wrestling coach; D.J. Eddy as seventh grade boys wrestling coach; J.D. Nidle as eighth grade boys basketball coach; Renee Fields and Tammy Morelli as cooks; Arielle Orban as an educational aide and secretary; and Jenny Potts as holiday program coordinator for the elementary schools.
Superintendent Coy Sudvary announced that administration at the district’s five schools have named custodial staff there as Employees of the Month for August in recognition of their hard work to prepare the buildings for the new school year.
The five August Employees of the Month are: Tammy Morelli at Buckeye Local High School, Jack Otto at Buckeye Local Junior High School, Ron Barcus at Buckeye Local North Elementary, Brian Zinko at Buckeye Local South Elementary, and Ray Long at Buckeye Local West Elementary.
Sudvary announced parent-teacher conferences will be held from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Oct. 8 at the junior-senior high school and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. that day at the elementary schools.
He noted there will be no school for students on Oct. 9, a professional development day.
